It looks like I have a general problem with downloading files from any
internet source:

My Anti-virus provider
Windows update website.
Pop3 email server
etc.

email messages will download several at a time, then just hang. I have
worked around this for now. my email client is outlook express.

windows update just hangs trying to get to the web page, but no error is
reported.

I was able to download new virus patterns from my provider, but not software
updates. I suspect I would see the same issue on any file download process.

any help would be most appreciated.

many thanks,

Phil Obley

Please look in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for
Warning and Error Reports and post copies here.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you
should double click for further information. You can copy using copy
and paste. Often the link will, however, say there is no further
information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event Viewer.
Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the
message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report.
Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event Viewer.

Hope this helps.

thanks for the suggestion, but nothing useful. there is a report that one of
the many hard drives was not detected, but I doubt it's relevant.

for some reason I had misread the state of the antivirus software. it is
nearly a month out of date. on its own this is not surprising, as the
machine was shut down from Nov 28 until a couple of days ago, while I was
out of the country.

I suspect something of the malware variety could be at play here, as all
sites such as trend micro, Symantec and grisoft seem to be blocked, while
others work ok.

thanks,

Phil

Select, Start, Help and Support, Keep your Windows up- to-date with
Windows Update, Review your Update History and click on the Failed
Icon in the Status Column. What does it say?

hi, it just hangs forever. never gets to the help screen in question
regarding updates. the network connection itself is fine, it's just the
internet that is spotty, and then apparently any site that could possibly
remedy the situation.

I'll update further after Boxing Day.

tx,

Phil

well, whilst preparing Christmas dinner, I installed a set of utilities
published by vcom. suddenly all the issues simply vanished. I still have
some hardware problems to sort out, but not in this newsgroup.

happy Christmas!

Phil
