ISA Sound Card

Hello all,

I have an ISA slot sound card Creative Labs CT2800 Vibra16s installed on an
older machine with originally win98 upgraded to XPpro. I cannot get any
sound. All audio codexes and drivers seems to be fine except an error that
tells me there is no mixer installed. I downloaded and tried to install the
drivers for this card but the error said they are 16bit applications and may
harm the system. Is this card too old for XP or am I missing something.

Yes, you are missing the beauty of a $399 P4 Dell. Your old
system is not worth spending money for upgrades.
But you might check your mobo mfg'r and Creative Labs for
info on the problem. I would suggest that you use the
device manager to remove the sound card and see if it will
properly install as a clean install, rather than an upgrade.

using a win98 or worse still...a 16 bit driver
is (as you can see) not likely to work with XP.
from the control panel...
completely uninstall the card and see if XP picks it up and installs
it upon reboot...
XP actually does support quite a few ISA devices.

if you have no luck...you can get a new pci sound card for as little as
$15 or so

Have you tried the drivers included with XP? I believe that you'll have to
use the hardware installation wizard to install them manually. I think that
XP won't autodetect ISA devices, even those of the PnP sorts. (I haven't
done that with a Vibra 16, but I have used a PnP ISA modem, and a legacy ISA
SCSI controller. Both worked.)

Try the Soundblaster 16/ Awe32 WDM drivers.

Better yet, if you have a free PCI slot, try a cheap PCI sound card.

Thank You all for the reponses. I'd rather just put the cheap sound card in
and forget it.
