Is v.92 modem supported by Compuserve?

P

Phil R.

I'm not sure if it's a modem problem or a compatibility problem. I
just bought a new US Robotics v.92 56K faxmodem and it's having
problems making a connection to my ISP. It sometimes does, and most of
the time doesn't. And when it does connect, the internet is very slow
and some websites do not come up. I've contacted both my ISP and modem
people to no avail. Should I just go with an older model modem?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Dont know if yor ISP suggested this but I know with some dial up accounts (AOL
being one so I'd assume Compuserve would have to be the same since they own it)
have speific numbers for the higher speed dialup accounts. Try resetting up
your dialing properties with compuserve and see if there are numbers for v.92
modems.

It should not matter, your modem should negotiate with the
ISP modem as to which protocol/speed is mutually
compatible.

Specific access numbers?

I just don't get it. This is the third v.92 modem I bought for this
new computer and none of them work properly, if at all. Maybe I should
re-install my last modem, which I had not ONE problem with.

Have you tried contacting Compuserve directly and ask them about this? Be much
eaiser to go straight to the source.

Compuserve = AOHell = Modem drivers loaded by ISP software.

As I stated in my original post, I already contacted them. They were
clueless. They had me doing all kinds of things that had NOTHING to do
with the new v.92 technology. That's why I contacted the modem people,
and they weren't helpful either. I just thought someone here had a
quick fix solution. Believe it or not, people roaming these newsgroups
are far more informative than the idiots working the tech phones.

It's actually a friend of mine that has this problem, and believe me,
I've tried convincing her to switch ISPs or get DSL/Cable modem. 10
bucks more a month and she wouldn't be having these problems.

Try going into the modem properties (don't know the exact place) and look
for a place that asks for "Extra Settings" and gives you a box to type
something in. Put in the following:
at&f
Now reboot computer and give it a try.

Did you try re-installing the modem. That is, delete the entry for it
from the device manager and let windows detect it? It's possible that
your system is still trying to use the previous modem's drivers and
settings if you simply swapped out the card. That might explain why
you've had 3 modems that didn't work right.

It could also be that your local phone lines have gotten screwed up
recently. If you're hearing a bit of static or buzzing on the line,
it could mean that something's wrong with the house box or the lines.
If your local phone company includes servicing in their monthly
charges, you might consider them testing it. Who knows, maybe a
squirrel took up residence.

Finally, I guess Compuserve is a part of AOL. While I've never used
AOL myself, I'm told they use some custom dialer and scripting
software. It could be that you have to update or reinstall that to
get a decent connection.
