Hi,
I just bought a new computer with 4 GB of PC 6400 Ram. I noticed that my System Info only showed 3,324.84 MB so I called
the manufacture. He said that this is correct because of the limits of the 32 bit OS but I thought I saw here that Vista
uses the whole 4 GB's
Can you please tell me which is true?

Have a good day,

Hi,

It's true, there is a limitation in the 32-bit version to the number of
addresses available - 4GB, some of which are used internally by the system
hardware. The balance of the remaining addresses are made available to the
system memory. This is why you see less than the full amount of physically
installed ram.

Yes, windows 32 bit cannot access the full 4 GB of ram.

So its true... This time I must defend vista, since most 32 bit OS do not
have the ability to "see" more ram than 3+ GB, even linux or Macs. Some
versions of windows servers can use some tricks and use more.. but dont
think that these solutions are too good for normal use.

So the only way to use more, is to go to 64 bit, but that includes other
problems. THe future is in 64 bit, I am sure of it..
but it needs time still for every application and driver to be ported to 64
bit.

By the way, if you own vista, you are entitiled to get a
dvd with the 64 bit version and use that instead of the 32 bit one,
of course you cant use both at the same time. And of course your PC must
have a 64bit capable CPU.

What you are seeing is normal. Here is a Microsoft article on the issue
32bit address space and website that has a good graphics explanation of what
is going on.

The system memory that is reported in the System Information dialog box in
Windows Vista is less than you expect if 4 GB of RAM is installed:

Thanks everyone for helping me on this.
I just wanted to be sure it was true.
