Is this the best way to resintall IE? Seems like it wen too fast....

Was running Windows XP today and went to IE to check for latest Windows
update. It said that I did not have a service started or something to
that affect along with troubleshooting links and so on.

Well I looked in services to be sure the BITS service was indeed
started. I even stopped and restarted it.

I also unregistered the below dll's and then re-registered them. I did
not reboot before or after this process.

I tried Windows Update again and got same error.

Then ran program that resets the XP registry entries telling Windows
that IE is not installed. I was then prompted to insert my XP Home CD
and point to the INF folder. Perhaps this is where I went wrong.

*********Should I have done this?

It only took a second and of course did not seem like the normal long
and drawn out IE installation.

I also tried deleting the contents of the V4 subdirectory, looking for
and deleting IECTL.dll (if I recall) and another DLL (wuaueng.dll I
think) from all directories with System or System32 being the last one
(this included DLLCACHE as well).

Also deleted any Windows update objects in IE under General Tab, View
Objects.

Not sure what else to do---have a whole article on this I put together
from other bits and pieces but still could not get things working.

Finally tried an SFC /scannow with a reboot. Still no luck getting
Windows update.

****What did I leave out?

Thanks in advance,
Patty

To reset the registry (for IE reinstall) I used a file called
ieresetinstall.vbs, I also have another program that does a similar
thing.

Yup did it all. Had SP2 installed.

The big question is that after you change the registry keys you are
prompted to insert a CD or point to the right place in I386 if I
recall. Then it takes a few seconds and it is done.

This does not appear like it really is copying the needed files over
other files as if you were installing a full blown IE.

That is what concerns me. You change the registry keys and then I would
have expected it to go through a long and drawn out proicess like
ie6setup.exe but instead it looks for one file.

Thanks
Patty
