Is there any way to annotate an e-mail item in Outlook?

I would like to be able to add an "annotation" to e-mail items that are in my
Outlook data store. Such an annotation might be to the effect "this e-mail
was in reference to contract #XYZ". I know that you can annotate documents
created in Word, Excel & Powerpoint. The functionality seems to not be
available in Outlook (or did I miss finding it).

Well that sort of does it but it's not exactly like the real annotate you
have in Word.
