Is there an easy way to download all the update products
for Windows XP and write a cd then take it to a friend
who does not have internet access? I looked on the update
site and I found network admin downloads but there were so
many
First, the Service Pack, SP1a from
http://www.microsoft.com/WindowsXP/pro/downloads/servicepacks/sp1/default.asp
Get the 'Network' one on the right - about 125MB
Then the consolidated update 826939 - go to
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;826939
and about a third down, take the 'Download 826939 package now' - 13 MB
or so.
After that the number of updates becomes within capacity of a dial up,
but you can go to Windows Update, on the left take Windows Update
Catalog (you may have to enable it in the 'Personalise' item first, and
you can then on the right select Updates to Operating systems', select
Windows XP SP1, and get offered a set of critical updates to add to a
download basket. Choose those after the date of that 826939 package,
last October. For a regular personal, stand-alone machine I would not
bother with ones that either refer explicitly to a 'server' or which
say 'an attacker would have to have access [or be able to log on]',
which are all related to the need of a business to prevent a possible
disaffected employee grabbing control
