Is there a Windows Error Log?

Hi,

My system froze twice last night and the only thing I could do is
press the 'reset' button which caused my file system to be checked on
startup - is there a log kept where I can try and find out what
happened?

I've installed/uninstalled a few programs lately and am wondering if
my system's becoming 'wobbly' - can't think of the proper word (early
dementia) so that'll have to do :)

I forgot to mention that it froze while clicking on a desktop shortcut
to 'Program Folders' and that I'm running WindowsXP

Hi John,

It's called the event viewer. You can get to it via the administrator tools,
or simply start/run eventvwr.msc to invoke the snap-in. Once there, check
the system and application logs. This will help if the problem is software
related, as it can pinpoint the modules involved. If the freezing is due to
a hardware problem, it may not help as it will only log problems due to
incompatibilities. If the problem is due to faulty hardware (and freezing
frequently is), then the logs may show nothing at all (once the hardware
fault causes the freeze, the event viewer is no more able to write an event,
just as you are unable to run any other software).

Sounds to me like you got some maintenance issues!

1. Disk cleanup - My computer/Rt Clk C:/Properties/Disk
Cleanup - (I check all the check boxes!)
2. Defragment - Same Place on properties/Tools/Defragment
Now
3. Download/Install/Run Ad-Aware from www.download.com
4. Run Active scan from www.pandasoftware.com

Let us know how you get on!
