Is there a way to my own custom buttons in a link bar?

Yes, I could completely build my own navigation structure, but would rather
not...
 
You would have modify a theme, and then apply that to the link bar.

Yep, like Thomas says, you'd have to modify the theme...create your own buttons but they can't be much wider than the existing ones (about 150px)...it's a tad tedious but I've done it before.

Start with existing theme, something close to what you want. Modify it...
Save the new theme under new name.

yes, just your menu/navigation bar in an image editor. Or create individual
buttons, inserted them into the page in a table.

or if I'm way off the question, here, yes, you can create customised Themes if
that is what you're asking.
