Is the volume control part of DirectX

I have not been able to resolve the reason that my volume controls are
greyed. The only other thing I can think of doing is reinstalling
directx

Start/Run/CMD. In the command prompt window type:

X: (where X is your CD Drive letter)
CD \I386

Then use the expand command: expand -r sndvol32.ex_ c:\windows\system32

Note: This assumes XP is installed on C: and that its installed in the
Windows folder. If not, you'll need to adjust the command accordingly.
Additionally, this must be an installable version of XP, not a "recovery CD".

Yes, it was, but this one may do it.
CD-ROM drive: (search where your i386 directory is located on "C" drive)
cd\i386
expand sndvol32.ex_ system_root\system32\sndvol32.exe
Note: The cd in front of i386=change directory, not compact disk

The only thing grayed-out in the pic is balance for center & subwoofer, which aren't stereo
channels -- makes sense to me.

I was going to ask you to have a look at the pick again. Then for some
reason I tried one of the slider bars and it worked! I assumed that
because the mute funcition was greyed that the entire control was
unusable. I still don't understand why the mute function is greyed but
anyway it works.

Thanks!

Once again we have traced the problem back to the main problem. I am
an idiot. :)

Thanks for your suggestion, but if it was to fix my volume controls it
didn't work.

LOL....I hadn't noticed that mute was grayed-out!

Just a guess, but maybe the reasoning is that muting is function reserved for sound sources, rather
than output devices.
