is spyware and anti virus the same

after problems with pc,i decided to factory restore my machine and start from
scratch again,now it`s fine except for one thing,i did not manually install
norton anti virus when it prompted me,and now i`m not protected against
viruses,will i have to do all the restoring again?or can i still do it, or
can i download a free anti virus program?also i have just downloaded micro
soft anti spy,will this work the same way as anti virus,or do i really need
to get a download,i also have windows firewall protecting my pc.
thanks in advance,by the way i`m a novice user,so please reply in simple
instructions.thanks again
