Is something wrong with my System Restore?

I try to get rid of Netzero software. (I deleted them already from my
remove program section but Netzero software still blocks my computer
and my new ISP.)

I was told to do a System Restore but mine goes just back to Oct. 31
but in order to get rid of Netzero I have to go back to Sept. 30.

What can I do to get that pain in a neck Netzero away?

Start > Run> msconfig, check in the Startup Tab for references to
Netzero, if any found uncheck.
If you have the skills you can also do a search on the registry
for it, delete any keys found, but do backup any you delete - just
in case ...

Look in Internet Options, Connections tab and remove any dialer
reference to NetZero.

Thanks, Roberto, I can do the first part.

With the registry I am not sure as the Netzero might have files that
are not identified as Netzero and I could accidentically mess around
with the others. But I try the first part for sure.

I just checked, Joe. There is nothing in it. Netzero hides elsewhere.

Hi Roberto, it partly helped. As you said, I shall remove anything that
had Netzero in it from the msconfig. A block of Netzero disappeared but
there are still remnants which didn't go away, as the dialer and the
netzero tool bar in IE.

I called a Netzero technican and he was clueless. I knew more about
computers than he and trust me, I don't know much.

Hi Bert,

thanks for the link, I followed all the uninstall instructions but
still could not get rid of the dialer and the Netzero toolbar. They are

See if NetZero has an activex component in Internet Options. Open
Internet Options, General tab, Settings button, "View Objects" button.
If so, remove it.

Thanks for staying with me on that, Joe.

I just checked in Internet Options, General tab, Settings button, "View
Objects" button. It is empty. Nothing in it.

This is really mysterious. Still, when I log in, there is the darn
Netzero dialer and the tool bar.

Are your Folder Options set to allow you to see Hidden and System files?
If not, that might explain why you didn't see anything in the ActiveX
Components area. One other way to see what's there:

- Click Start, Run type CMD, Press Enter.

- Type: CD C:\Windows\Downloaded Program Files

- Look through the list of files for a reference to NetZero.

Something else to try:

Open the folder C:\Program Files\Netzero and press Ctrl/A to select all
files in the folder. Press the Delete key to attempt to remove all. If
you get a message that the folder can't be removed, look in the folder
and see what files are remaining. Press Ctrl/Alt-Delete and look for
those programs. When located, end the task, go back to the folder and
attempt to remove it again.

Or:

Look in the Registry for references to Netzero (Press F3). Don't remove
them, but see if there are any in a Run folder (in the left pane).

*** Yes, they showed up. But none had the name Netzero. I just had five
files in it. One said that one file is corrupted. So, I deleted that
one. With that, all the other files deleted themselves and guess what,
the Netzero tool bar disappeared. Thanks, Joe, that was a big help. But
another parasite is the Netzero dialer. It did not go away. When I log
in, Netzero dialer still shows up.

Hm, in what program do I find that C file?

You are too advanced for me, Joe. I am in my baby shoes. How do I find
the registry? That is not the reg cleaner, right? I found stuff in my
reg cleaner with Netzero but don't know how to kick it out.

You did go to Internet Options, Connections tab and select "Never dial a
connection", right?

Explore your way to the C:\Program Files\Netzero folder. One way to
open Explorer is to right-click the Start button, click Explore.

Click Start, Run, type REGEDIT, press the Enter key. Once opened, press
F3, type netzero into the search pane, click Find Now. You want to find
out what programs are associated with NetZero, if any are started by a
Run key. (That's a folder in the left pane.) Don't make changes, but
report back on what programs are mentioned in re to NetZero entries.

Yes, I did this is set on "never dial a connection."
Explore your way to the C:\Program Files\Netzero folder. One way to
open Explorer is to right-click the Start button, click Explore.

This is getting real interesting, Joe. I did everything you wrote and I
discovered numerous still secretly existing Netzero files in Explore. I
deleted them all, except one, which I could not delete.

When I click on this file, I get the message: Netzero Exec is a
program. Do you want to delete? I clicked yes and then I got the
message: Delete access denied, cannot delete exec.

This is weird. I think this is the troublemaker.

This is also interesting, Joe. I looked at this long list but I did not
see the name Netzero. But there are a lot of programs that have just
numbers and letters and it is impossible to say to what program they
belonged. But I made no changes.

How can I delete that nasty Netzero exec?

Thanks a lot for your help, Joe. I learned a lot.

Netzero Exec is probably running and that's why it can't be deleted. If
it isn't running in Safe Mode, you could possibly delete it there. You
may then get a complaint upon restart that the file couldn't be found,
and you'll have to find it in the registry and remove the reference to it.

Programs that might remove it completely from Startup:

Hi Joe!

I downloaded snapfiles and got rid of Netzero! It is finally gone, when
I log in, the Netzero does no longer pop in my face.

Thanks, I owe it to you. You are a great teacher! Take care! :)
