XP Pro SP2 factory sealed full version, installed on my desktop, with code,
validated by WGA as authentic. BUT, I'm trying to create a slipstream w/SP3
to recover my laptop. In copying the Setup Disc to my local HD, McAfee
detects a trojan in i386\SVCPACK\update.exe which is not MS but Igor Pavlov
version 4.14.0.0 7z Self-Extract Setup dated Sunday, July 05, 2009, 11:12:56
AM.

McAfee identifies the trojan as generic!bg.ixy.

I have had no problems with this PC, install, or validation, updates, etc.
but this seems bogus to me. Please advise.
Thanks

Drop McAfee

Love to but it's free. Just surprised to see Pavlov's stuff on a legit MS XP
disc.

McAfee is free through your ISP or something - but there are many other
free, less intrusive, better all around antgivirus applications out there.

Drop McAfee.

Get Avira AntiVir if you need an alternative:
http://www.free-av.de/en/trialpay_download/1/avira_antivir_personal__free_antivirus.html

If McAfee is the full suite of products (antivirus, antimalware and
firewall, etc) - definitely drop it.

Use Avira (above, free), the built in (free) Windows firewall and do
occassional scans with MalwareBytes (free.)

Likely you are getting a false positive - and it is not the first nor is it
likely the last - from McAfee.

Don't like Avira? AVG Antivirus is free. Avast! Antivirus is free. There
are lots of free applications out there that do a better job than McAfee.
;-)

Pretty much any application you list - there is likely a free alternative
that is almost as good, is as good or is better out there. Even the 'cost'
ones that are really good are often fairly inexpensive.
