Is my Umax scanner at all usable on OS X??

I've got 2 Umax scanners: an Astra 2400U connected via SCSI, and an Astra
2100U with a USB connection. They both worked well on OS 9, but now I'm
running OS X (Panther) on hardware which won't even boot OS 9. Are these now
paperweights, or is there any possible way to use either one, either
directly on Panther, or through Classic mode? Any help would be greatly
appreciated...

forget about VueScan http://www.hamrick.com/
as it will not work with your model of Umax scanners (he has an
explanation why on his website). You will need to have go with
SilverFast from LaserSoft http://www.lasersoft.com/

The 2100U has no software for OS X

Are you sure the other one is a 2400U? I don't see that model listed on
the Umax website, only a 2400S and a 2400SLT. Both of those would use
the SilverFast software.

There is a third party driver that works with some UMAX Scanners. But
given the market it may be cheaper to just replace the scanner with one
from a company that is actually supporting OS X. I help out at my
daughter's school and that is what we are doing (well, when we find some
money to pay for them).

Your SCSI scanner should be supported by VueScan. See
<http://www.hamrick.com>. VueScan won't work with the USB scanner.

Something I just found out. The UMAX USB scanner I use works with
PhotoShop LE and the Twain driver under Classic in OS X. The buttons on
the scanner don't work but the Acquire function in PSLE does.

I think the Twain driver should work with other apps too. It might have
to be a Classic app, I haven't tested this with other apps yet.

I've found that all of the Umax USB scanners I've tested for clients
work in Classic.
