Is my data gone forever?

Hi

Sorry if this is a repeat but my first post doesn't appear

My dell Pentium III motherboard died during a power surge

The Western Digital 180g IDE drive seems ok, but used as a slave on another machine the documents & settings files are all inaccessible

I bought a new computer with a 74 gig SATA drive. No software installed. I have an original Windows XP CD

Can someone suggest how I can salvage the data from the old drive

Thanks and regards

Hi,

Hi;

Is there a permission problem?
If so, try to take ownership of the files:
HOW TO: Take Ownership of a File or Folder in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308421

For this to work, you need to boot in safe mode in XP Home (F8),
in XP Professional you need to disable simple file sharing in Windows
Explorer > Tools > Folder Options.

Good luck

Take Ownership, #7 on this link:

If the data is actually encrypted, See #3 on the same link.
