Transferring Files

I just bought an SATA disk drive and installed it into my computer. I am
keeping an IDE disk drive in as a slave. I put WinXP Home Operating System
on the SATA drive. My old IDE drive has the operating files on it also. I
would like to know how can I transfer the settings and files from the IDE to
the SATA drive? I want the START settings to be the same on the SATA drive
as on the IDE drive.

I have an Asus P5GD2-X Motherboard that has only one Primary IDE connector
that I have a DVD/RE-Writer set as the slave and the IDE disk drive as the
master. There are four SATA connectors. I would also like to know how the
jumper settings should be?

Thank you;
David

David:
First of all, we'll assume your SATA HD boots without any problem and is
properly functioning. No problems with the SATA drive, right?

The question is what is your precise objective?

If you could clone the contents of your PATA (what you call "IDE") HD onto
your new SATA HD so that the SATA HD would, in effect, be an exact copy of
the old drive, would that meet your requirements? Or have you added programs
& data to your SATA drive so that you don't want to lose those programs/data
(which you would should you undertake the cloning process I've mentioned).

If a "clone" would meet your requirements, then a disk copying utility
that's available from the HD manufacturer is usually available. If you
purchased a retail boxed version of your SATA HD that utility would be
included on the CD accompanying the drive. The utility is also generally
available from the manufacturer's website. If you're interested in this
cloning process you might want to look into purchasing a disk imaging
program such as Symantec's Norton Ghost or Acronis True Image. You could, as
many of us do, use these programs for routine comprehensive backup purposes,
perhaps using your old PATA HD as the recipient of the clone.

If, on the other hand, you're not interested in cloning the contents of one
HD to another, the XP Files & Settings Transfer Wizard (FAST) may be what
you want. See
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/deploy/mgrtfset.mspx
for an introduction and step-by-step guide for using that program.

I'm not sure I understand your question as to jumper settings. Are you
referring to your SATA HDs? I assume you've set your PATA drive as Slave,
yes? Insofar as the SATA drives are concerned there's usually no jumper
setting even available, or if there is, in nearly every case you'll leave
the jumper setting as set by the manufacturer.
