Is Microsoft Addressing the OUTLOOK 2007 IS SLOOOOWWW Problem?

Just a YES or NO answer will do.

There are countless people reporting the same thing, and to keep asking what
you are running, if in safe mode, how big is your .PST file, etc., is
fruitless. The point is that this slugishness did NOT happen with Outlook
2003. And yes, many like me ARE running the TR update.

So, an answer from Microsoft would be very much appreciated....yes or no.

Thank you.

Andy

In short, yes.

However, you shouldn't expect any answers from Microsoft in a peer-to-peer forum like this.

Beta software is always slower because it has not been optimized for production use yet. You did read the page at http://www.microsoft.com/office/preview/beta/getthebeta.mspx, right? Quoting:

-- Beta software does not necessarily display the same high level of stability of shipped Microsoft products.

-- Beta testers may experience problems with 2007 Microsoft Office system Beta 2 products that could potentially result in loss, corruption, or destruction of existing data.

-- This beta testing release is not appropriate for production use.

I can understand that you are upset, but no one here can tell you more
than:
a) Outlook could be slow due to an add-in that is not compatible with
Outlook 2007. That is the most common reason. The easiest way to debug
this is running Outlook in safe mode.
b) It could be a virus scanner integrating itself with Outlook and that
particular program not being compatible with 2007. It is perfectly safe
to turn off any Outlook anti-virus integration, as it doesn't add any
additional security beyond what is provided by Outlook and your normal
anti-virus scanner already. All it does is take away performance.
c) You are using a beta version. You can expect some performance
improvement at RTM simply by the fact that it won't be beta.
d) As a program moves through the beta cycle and towards RTM, Microsoft
constantly works on improving its performance. Due to that, RTM will be
faster than B2TR.
e) Keeping your hard drive defragmented is a good habit and helps with
any program accessing large files. As PST files can get quite large,
defragmentation can do quite a bit for performance. My own PSTs are ~5
GB and ~1.5 GB and Outlook performance definitely improves when my disk
is less fragmented.
f) Outlook 2007 has an instant search feature. That requires that all
your emails need to be indexed and that the index is stored on your hard
drive. That means, Outlook will need to read every message in your PST
files (including new ones you get), so that it can be indexed.
Obviously, that takes some performance to do. I would assume though that
the algorithm for when to index and when not will be improved in RTM. In
addition, the index is another large file that is on your hard drive, so
a fragmented hard drive will give you a performance cost in writing to
it.
g) No one from Microsoft reads or responds in these newsgroups, so you
won't get an answer from Microsoft directly.
h) There is no way of telling whether YOUR particular performance
problem will be solved at RTM unless you install the RTM build and try
it out.

Here is what you should do:
1. Disable the Outlook integration of your anti-virus scanner.
2. Test it in safe mode. Does the performance problem go away then? If
yes, go take a good look at your add-ins.
3. Defragment your hard drive.
If your performance problem didn't go away, you will have to wait till
RTM.

Thanks so much, Patrick. All things considered in what you wrote, I think
most of us will see the improvement from the RTM. I thought that this might
be the case. Disk is defrag'ed, etc....so it's just the wait for the RTM.

Thanks!

Yes, I did, Sue...thanks.

I just wanted to make sure that this was the issue and not something else
causing the slowdown. I will wait for the official release. Thanks much!

Andy

Sue...

One more question....I have another thread re: RSS FEEDS not updating. Is
this the proper area to ask questions RE: Outlook 2007? Just wanted to be
sure.

Thanks...
