Is Media Centre based on Home or Pro?

I've heard windows media centre described as both. I know that I can't
use Media Centre edition to join a domain.

What I need to know specifically is 1) does media centre come with IIS,
or can I at least install it for free, and 2) can I use Remote Desktop
to connect to other PC's and use to connect to the media centre PC from
another location.

I've tried looking for a media centre specific forum but couldn't find
one. If there is one, please let me know.

I have two computers with two different versions of Media Center (2002 and
2005).
IIS is included with both. You will probably have to install it using
Add/Remove Programs>Add Windows Components.
Remote Desktop works on both machines.
MCE2002 is able to join a domain and MCE2005 is not.
Both OS's are based on XP Pro

It's own SKU.
It is significantly closer to Pro Edition, rather than Home edition because
it has all the pro features except for domain join (and associated domain
operations) and cached credentials.

So to answer your question, IIS and Remote Desktop are included in Media
Center Edition.

Microsoft has a media center newsgroup at
microsoft.public.windows.mediacenter

Thanks Jason.

I actually wanted a business computer, but an HP PC with Windows Media
Center seemed closest in hardware to what I'm looking for - 2GB ram and
a dual core cpu. I just wasn't sure if I could use it with Media Center
as is or if I'd have to install XP Pro. I'll need the IIS and the Remote
Desktop.

You've answered my questions, and I will check out that other forum.
Again, thanks.

It's a superset of XP Professional. It has everything in Professional
(except the ability to join a domain) , with extra media features added.

Correct.

Yes.
