My laptop was recently stolen, and I was wondering if the location or IP address can be traced from wherever the automatic update takes place.

thanks in advance

No, there is no way Microsoft can track a stolen laptop.
You may wish to contact your ISP for help.

whoever stole it might just load different xp with
different numbers.

remember the update statement about "not getting private
information when you update". you do not want this
private info sent.... therefore you have no question here.
