Is it possible to stop IE being hijacked?

Had my browser hijacked by coolweb virus - nothing would remove it
permanently

Painstakingly reformatted hard drive - reinstalled operating system -
reinstalled IE6

3 days in got hijacked again

IE is not fun - can i secure it, or do i ditch it in favor of more secure
browser?

Do you have your firewall turned on? Are you running your computer as an
aministrator? What kind of antivirus software are you running?
I have no such problems - never had them. It's not the OS and it's not the
software, but perhaps the lack of proper software and good user savvy that
is needed.
