How to make IE accept it is NOT the default browser?

How does one convince Internet Explorer that it is NOT --
and never will be -- one's choice of default browser? I
never use it online for security reasons but do use it in
order to tweak my stylesheets to handle IE's CSS bugs after
designing web pages using W3C-compliant browsers.
That I can bear. What really infuriates me is that nothing
I do will prevent IE from opening whenever I select a link
in an email message. I have placed the necessary entry in
my eudora.ini file, but no matter what browser is set as
the default, this IE crap insists on hijacking it.
No doubt this can all be fixed by changing an entry in the
Windows registry, but as a busy IT veteran who simply does
not have the time to take an in-depth course on the inner
mysteries of the registry, where do I start looking? Yes, I
have trawled Google looking for answers but the only
ultimate result is yet more requests for help from other
users infuriated by the same Microsoft-generated
time-wasting "features". Any really helpful suggestions,
anyone?
Thanks

Normanw,

Open Internet Explorer, Tools, Internet Options.
In the Programs tab, uncheck the option "Internet Explorer should check to see........."

Next, it's the duty of your alternate browser to handle the file associations.

Could you please tell me more about your comment
"Next, it's the duty of your alternate browser to handle the file

I thought that file associations were handled by the operating system, Win
98SE for me, but I can not download some .CSV files in IE6 that I can in NS.
Thank you

Mel,

The File associations are modified by the browser you install and the OS takes those values. What happens when you try to download the file .CSV format? Do you get a Open/Save as prompt?

If I click on the "download data" button on the site the csv file starts
downloading but never completes forcing me to ctrl-alt-del. The same button
in Netscape downloads the csv file without further prompts and opens it in
Excel.
In neither program am I prompted "file or open".

Sorry PA Bear but I miss your point.
No third party plugin is necessary to download .CSV files in any browser to
my knowledge. Also other users download this file successfully using IE6.
Are you saying that something in my Netscape program "not active" is causing
the problem in IE6?

Note that .CSV also opens with Excel.

Ramesh,

Reading your reply (cut&pasted below), can you help us
with a problem.

I'm developing a website for IE and I have a log file
that is a .csv file that is linked to for download.
However, when it is downloaded and selected to save NOT
open, it saves it as a .xls file. I need it to download
as a csv file. But if you select open, it opens it in
excel as a csv file and allows you save as a csv. Also,
when the path to the file is typed in the Address Bar
instead of clicking on a link, the dialogue box that asks
you to save or open pops up, but either choices leads to
an error saying it can't open or save the file. Which is
odd because the file IS there and perfectly fine but will
only download if you click a link. I know this is a
browser issue because everything I just described works
perfectly in Firefox. Any solutions or suggestions would
be much appreciated. Thanks so much.
