Can't reset IE as default browser

I tried installing Mozilla's Firefox just to check it out
and accidentally assigned it as my default browser. For
some reason, IE doesn't seem to know that it is no longer
the default Browser. I have the option turned on in the
Programs tab to check if it's the default, but it never
prompts me to reset it.

Even after uninstalling Firefox, IE still doesn't know
it's no longer the default. I reassigned all HTML and HTM
files to IE, but that didn't seem to fix it. I have to
open IE manually now to navigate to websites.

This is annoying!

It's not an Internet Explorer problem. The browser you used did not release the file associations.
Try http://www.pc-tools.net/win32/freeware/setbrowser/

If running XP, try this REG file:
http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/reg/IE_Default_Browser.reg

Tools / Options /Programs / then tick IE as a default browser

Then IE should ask you if you want it to be the default browser.

Sorry, no box to tick IE as the default browser. There IS a box to set
Internet Explorer to always ask if it is the default browser.

The proper button to click is "Reset Web settings...", then make sure to
tick "Always ask if Internet Explorer is the default browser."
