Is it possible to make a folder on the desktop expand?

That way I would not have to open the various folders on
the desktop to view the contents.

Expand where?

Start - Control Panel - Display - Desktop - Customise Desktop - Web and add a folder instead of a file.

Easiest way to do this would be to place the parent folder on the Quick
Launch toolbar.
