Is it possible to install XP onto a removable USB hard drive?

It is not possible to boot on a PC with the USB storage device because the PC OS must be loaded first so that the USB storage device can be detected
 
Would this work? Use an OS, e.g. XP, on the hard disk, and then via
Microsoft Virtual PC or VMWare, launch the OS on the USB storage device
into a virtual session? I've not done this, but might be worth an
experiment if indeed you need the OS stored on a USB device.
