Is it possible to globally turn off Preview Pane?

Subject says it all. I don't like the Preview pane, I don't use it, and I
don't want it. Yet every time I open any of my folders (and I have hundreds)
for the first time after a new install, I get the default view that includes
use of the preview pane. For years I've been wanting to ask this question,
so here it is: is there some way that I can turn this off by default so that
ALL of the folder views that I open hereafter do NOT use the preview pane?

Thanks in advance!

Start Outlook from ashortcut with the /nopreview switch added to the path.
example:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\OUTLOOK.EXE" /nopreview
