Is it IE6 or my ISP? Page cannot be displayed error???

N

Nancy

When I boot up and go to IE6 it sometimes works and sometimes doesn't.
1. The 1st web page appears but when I want to go to a 2nd I get the can't
display page.
2. I dont' get any web page, just the can't display page error
3. I re-boot and sometimes get a page and sometime don't
Although I can always send and received e-mail via Outlook Express.
I've done a IE repair. Pinged my ISP with sucess and a few other sites with
success. The modem (Cable Broadband) lights flash as if they are sending
and
receiving, but I'm not seeing anything.
Any and all Help would be appreciated.

First eliminate any spyware.

Nope, LSP-Fix didn't work. I ran the program and got no files on the remove
side.
Did a finish and repair summary was all zero's. Winsock.dll is still on my
machine.
I also did an SFC and replaced 3 corrupted files. Did a re-boot and got on
the
Internet (temporarily). When I tried to go to another site, it wouldn't go.
Thanks!

Nancy,

Your problem sounds similar to one that I finally got fixed. Mr. Dan Varnau
mentioned kb article 281679 to another person who was having similar issues.
The article showed how to reregister some DLLs. I'm not real computer savvy,
but when I ran through all the steps in the article (CMD - RUN - regsvr32
about 8 DLLs) my IE finally starting working again. I hope this helps.

Hi Nancy,

According to your description, I understand that Internet Explorer cannot
only continuously access to websites.

Based on my experience, this issue could be caused by a variety of factors.
To narrow down this issue, please try the following steps:

#1
As Frank suggested, this issue could be caused by some spyware. I know
that have tried Frank's suggestion and it doesn't help on your side.
Moreover, I wonder if you have installed any anti-virus software on your
computer. If yes, please try to use it scan the hard disk to check if
there is any potential virus. If not, we can use Symantec's online Virus &
Security checker to examine your computer's security status:

http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/default.asp?langid=ie&venid=sym

Click Go to proceed with a Security Scan and Virus Detection. Please make
a note of the infected files and then delete them.

#2
As Paul mentioned, this issue also may occur if some registry files are
corrupt or damaged. To re-register the files, please refer the steps in KB
281679:

You cannot open a new Internet Explorer window or nothing occurs after you
click a link
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=281679

# 3
This issue also may occur if the drivers for the modem and Network Adapter
are not correctly installed. Let's uninstalled the drivers for the modem
and Network Adapter, and then restarted Windows to reinstall the drivers.
To uninstall them, please refer to the following steps:

1. Click Start\right-click My Computer\Properties\Hardware\Device
Manager\Modems.
2. Right-click the modem\"Uninstall", and confirm.
3. Back to Device Manager, expand Network Adapters, right-click\"Uninstall"
and confirm
4. Close Device Manager and System Properties.
5. Click Start\ Control Panel\Network Connections, right-click\Delete all
the connections there and confirm.
6. Restart your computer, and then reinstall the drivers for Modem and
Network Adapter.

#4
You can take a look at the following article which lists many possible
reasons that my cause this issue. Please try the method in the article to
resolve this problem.

326155 "The Page Cannot Be Displayed" Error Message When You Try to Start
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=326155

If the suggestions don't help, please help us collect more information for
further troubleshooting:

1. What is the operating system installed on your computer?

2. How is it installed, clean installation or upgrade installation?

3. When did this issue first occur, after applying any updates or after
installing some specific software?

4. Does this issue occur in Windows Safe Mode with Networking?

a. Restart the computer.
b. Keep pressing the F8 key until the Windows Startup menu appears.
c. Choose Safe mode with Networking, and press Enter.
d. Start the computer in Safe Mode with Networking.

Note: In Safe Mode, your system display and Desktop will look and perform
differently than in Normal Mode. This is only temporary. To return the
system back to Normal Mode, we can simply restart the computer.

5. Does this issue occur if you use another user account to log on to this
computer?

If anything unclear or you need further assistance, please let me know.

Ada Pan

I too have the same problem. When I booted into Safe Mode, IE is working
fine. What does this mean? I'm running XP Pro w/SP2. This problem occured
8/19/2005. I did not make any changes to my pc. Thanks!

I started having internet access problems on that date as well. I've tried
most everything but still get no response from IE except that it cannot
access. Naturally, I can't download any helpful programs since I can't get on
line. I'm using an ancient laptop to look for help. Help!

Hello there,

I understand that you have similar issues on your sides. However, this
behavior "page cannot be displayed" could be caused by different reasons.

Have you tried the steps in my previous post? If not, please try it first.

In the meantime, I would like to let you know that we answer one question
per post in the newsgroups. If the suggestions provided has not helped you,
it must be a different issue. In order to concentrate fully on the new
issue we ask that you post it as a separate thread. That way each issue can
receive full attention and will also make the thread more clear and
consistent for others reference. Please feel free to open a new post for
this issue and we will be very glad to work with you.

Thank you!

Success! For months I've gotten the "Page cannot..." message in both IE6 and
Mozilla browsers on certain mainstream sites (e.g. nytimes.com and
my.yahoo.com) while other sites were fine. After reading Vanessa's reply I
checked various possibilities in Article 326155.

- searched for files named "hosts" in c:\windows and named them "xxxhosts"

Also according to Article 256986

- tested for Winsock 2 corruption with Start:Run: ipconfig / renew

Not sure which one did it - I suspect it was the "hosts" change. I'm
getting all the web sites again, like new. Good luck.
