.... to use Automatic Updates on Windows 2000 Server or is it better to
manually download patches and then use them with qchain? It happened to me
twice that (on different computers) Automatic Updates freezed while
installing security updates. I had to kill the AU process in the middle of
installation and restart the computer. Now I dont know if I can trust AU any
more. Any suggestions?

I would not be happy leaving any server to update itself especially
infrastructure servers. Would be better to implement a SUS server to pull
updates to a local store which you control or visit each server and running
Windows Update monthly.
