Hello,

I hope there is someone kind enough to help. I have started trying to
create a network and have an old windows 2000 Pc and a new laptop running XP.

I decided to change the workgroup settings on the PC to match those of the
XP laptop. The PC with windows 2000 told me that the system would need to
reboot for these changes to take effect.

Well the Pc with windosw 2000 starts but cuts out before reaching the login
screen and starts again (cycle). Over the last half day I have learnt my
lesson about the importance of backups but I am where I am and could do
with some help. I have been able to use disks to reach the recovery console
where I can repor the following log from the file Windowsupdate.log and are
the last entries:

Agent*Base directory:C\WINNT\SoftwareDistribution
Agent*Access type:No proxy
Agent*Network state:connected
Agent********Agent:Initializing Windows updare agent
Agent********Agent:Initializinig global settings cache*****
Agent*WSUS server:<NULL>
Agent*WSUS status server:<NULL>
Agent*Target Group:<Unassigned computers>
Agent*Windows Update access disabled: No

AU#Auto-Install minor updates:No <User preference>
DtaStore~FATAL:Failed to initialise datastore, error=0xC8000711
AU~FATAL:Failed to get session from datastore, error=0xC8000711
~Service~********
~Service~**END** Service exit [Exit code = 0x240001]
~Service~***********

P.S. this symbol was used ~ as i could not find the symbol used in the log
of the recovery console

Thanks for your comments and help. If I should be looking in other
directories let me know.

Are you sure the log file says Base directory is
"C\WINNT\SoftwareDistribution"? That doesn't look like a valid path to me.
