From the perspective of someone who has used both for quite a while, I would
say the biggest difference is stability and compatibility. WinXP is much
more stable then Win2000, and is compatible with a wider range of hardware
and software. On every machine that I've ran them on, Win2000 would BSOD
several times a month, sometimes several times a week. WinXP will BSOD
quarterly. WinXP is not perfect, but it's much more stable the Win2000 every
thought of being.
?
I've run both for a while too, (Win2k for 2-3 years, WinXP for ~8
months) and I can detect no difference in stability. I don't know what
you were doing with Win2k, but mine only got rebooted when a) a patch
required it or b) the power went off.
WinXP has more niggling bugs (the systray for instance) but much better
help & support, and will be supported by MS for longer. For a new
machine I'd go with WinXP .. if I had one running Win2k I'd only upgrade
if there was a good reason (Clearview with a TFT screen may be such a
reason).
