IP conflict help

Hello, one of my Windows 2000 servers has been getting an IP conflict with
another system on my network. However I have checked my DNS and DHCP and IP
scanner and no other machine is using that particular IP. The event log
gives me the MAC address of the other system with the same IP. Is there
anyway I can get the machine name or some information from that MAC address
to find the machine on my network. I would just change the IP address of the
server if I could but that is not an option. Is there any way this could be
a mistake and there really is not another machine on my network with the same
IP? I appreciate any help. Thanks.

Scott, Im not very familar with WINS and we do not really use it. I did
check the WINS snap in on my DHCP server and did a look up by name and owner.
My DHCP server is the server with the IP conflict by the way. When I did
by name my server came back with 2 entries file server and workstation both
with the same name and same IP address. Do you have any other suggestions?
Thank you for the reply.

Try:

1. Make sure the DHCP server's IP address is excluded from the scope.

2. Check Device Manager - show hidden devices. Possibly previously
'uninstalled' adapters were assigned the same address.

3. If the DHCP server is multihomed, see:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;310844

4. You can direct an nbtstat -a command to a remote machine and it will
return, among other things, the MAC address. You could write a script to do
this for multiple machines, but if there are a lot of them ................

Briefly unplug the network cable from the machine that you know is supposed
to have the address. Then from another machine try to ping the affending
IP#.
Does something respond?

Phil,

You can also set your DHCP to detect addresses that are in use and then
revoke all leases. This isn't an immediate fix, but should resolve the
problem and prevent it from happening again.
