Hello- I'm having difficulty with a dial up connection on
a windows xp home machine. The dialer does connect, but
the ppp adapter always has the same ip adress as the
remote gateway. the dns are good- and that suprised me.
The modem is an onboard Conexant 56k ACLink Modem, built
into a Compaq Presario 2500 notebook.
One oter thing i noticed, is that when i type a URL into
IE, it adds "/?%20" for example:

HTTP:///?? google.com/

I have
-tried deleting the dialer

-Check for firewalls (XP or 3rd Party)

-Reinstalling Modem drivers after uninstalling the device
through safe mode

-tcp/ip reset via netsh interface (although this seems to
be a problem with the PPP adapter, and i don't know how
to "reset" that)

-repair install of Windows XP Home

-scanned for virus/ adware with Norton 2004, stinger,
kaspersky, Adaware 6, and Spybot.

-I have even physically removed the hard drive and scanned
it as a secondary drive on another machine with the above
utilities.

I am at a complete loss for any other possible solution
besides a reformat. I've tried multiple DUN accounts via
seperate providers as well. Any help would be greatly
appreciated, as i am "fixing" this as a personal favor and
my boss is starting to get annoyed at the amount of bench
time this machine is taking. Thanks again~j

That's normal behavior for a dial-up (PPP) connection.

I'm sorry, but I don't have an answer. If you'll post that question
in an IE news group, I'm sure that someone can answer it.

I don't know the answer to the odd prefix, but I'd check here in the
registry:
Using Regedit, have a look at this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL

This contains 2 sub-keys, as follows:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL\DefaultPre
fix]

Default ="http://"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL\Prefixes]

"ftp"="ftp://"
"gopher"="gopher://"
"home"="http://"
"mosaic"="http://"
"www"="http://"

Thanks for the help. Unfortunately, both of those keys'
values are normal. Aside from browsing, tee seems to e no
tcp/ip connection at all. i cant ftp, ping (past my own ip
address), or tracert...

Thanks for the reply- i didn't know that was normal
behavior for ppp conections. Never noticed. Either way-
the ip adress changes every time, i think i just don't
have tcp/ip conectivity...
