IP Address not assigned

Hi there,

Freshly installed XP Prof with SP2 on Pentium 2 and D-Link PCI Wireless
adapter.

How can it be that my PC does not want to assign an IP Address to my PC?
For some reason I am trying to figure out these past two days why I
cannot get this specific PC connected to my wirelss DSL Router. It see
the network but cannot get connected to it. I have removed the driver,
removed the PCI card, re-inserted it, Downloaded IP Renew - still
nothing.

When I run this IP Renew software, I get a message that current IP: NOT
ASSIGNED.

Why can this be an how can I fix this. This is frustrating me
enourmously, especially because my other PC connectes perfectly.

I have even reset the router so that there is absolutely no securities
setup or anything.

I hope you can help me out here.

I bought a Dlink wifi router + Dlink PCMCIA wifi adapter.

Managed to get the router to work by downgrading the firmware.
Threw the card away and bought another one.

Is the problem with the card or the PC? For example try connecting via
ethernet or modem.

Did you chech support.dlink.com for troubleshooting?

Deon: I had this same problem with a Linksys USB adapter... the computer
refused to obtain an address automatically from the router, although other
computers on the wireless network worked fine. I was able to get things
working by manually entering an address, though it's been so long ago I can't
tell you exactly how I did this. HOWEVER... I recently lost my WinXP OS and
had to have it reinstalled. NOW the computer is able to get an address
assignment from the router with no problem at all. Could it be someting in
the Windows 'Wireless Zero Configuration' routine? I don't know. By the
way, is your router a D-Link? Mine used to be, but its range was so feeble
that I swapped it out for a Linksys. A friend at work with a D-Link did the
same thing with much better range and results. The D-Link USB adapters seem
to be okay though.

Hi again,

for some reason it works now - I wish I knew what I did. What happens
now after all the WIN XP Rof updates after SP2, is that the PC only
boots up about 80% and then re-boots. What can cause this?

I'm almost on the brink of throwing this PC away (but I need it so
much).

Deon: If it's working now, just be thankful and keep on computing. The
system I am using now must be my 7th. or 8th. one since the 286 replaced the
IBM XT. With each one, on numerous occasions I felt like throwing the thing
out the window and going back to pen, paper, the telephone and filing
cabinets. Computers make so many jobs easier than 'the old way,' but the
problem is that learning new software and keeping the computer running
occupies all the time that was supposed to be set free, maybe even more!
Like women... "Can't live with them, can't live without them."
