How to input IP Address

R

Robt.Black

I over-enthusiastically 'cleaned out' my computer.

The upshot is that I can no longer access the internet or email.
I checked with BT who assure me that there is nothing wrong
with my Router or their phone line after running some checks

I cannot config /release or renew as normal.
I am left with 0.0.0.0

It seems I need to enter the IP address 192.18.2.1
into my PC, (presumably Windows).
How/where do I do this, please.

Thanks...Robert

Ooops!! That should be 192.168.2.1.
No matter...I just need to know where to enter it and how.

Thanks again.

Looks like the way to access your router via IE

Put that URL into the address area

I think it is 192.168.1.1 and you enter it in the address bar of your
browser. It will then open a web page on your router.

But before you do that, have you run the New Connection wizard in XP?

Your best bet is to click Start / Help, then look for help
on TCP/IP. The item "Configure your TCP/IP Settings"
is what you need.

Thanks to you all for your responses.
I am most grateful. None of the options
appear to work, and some, like inputting to
the browser address bar I had already tried.
I must have another issue here.
Maybe I need to reinstall WinXP....Yes??

No, you do not need to reinstall XP.
Instead, you must setup the network using the wizards.

Go to a command prompt, start, run, cmd.

Type ipconfig /release and press enter, then ipconfig /renew and press
enter.

Do you get a message that no adapter is in a state that it can be released
or renewed?

No, you do not. The problem is elsewhere. Plus, that address is likely
*your router* and you will generate an address conflict. Use 2.5 instead,
for the moment. However, if you use fixed IP addresses you also likely
need to know the DNS server addresses; if you don't know this and do need
them, you'll get to the router and nowhere else.

Set your network adapter to DHCP (automatic) rather than fixed, and this is
in Control Panel, Network, right-click on the adapter and choose Properties,
then TCP/IP and properties.

If you can't release and renew and have this work, close from there, go to
Device Manager and uninstall the network adapter, then restart the system
and allow it to be re-detected and reinstalled.

Finally you can reset TCP/IP by going to a command prompt and issuing the
following command:

netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt

Also try 192.168.0.1 It is typed into the address bar just like you
would type yahoo.com or whatever.

Open a CMd prompt, type:

PING 192.168.2.1

... and report back with the results.

You should look at the wiring again too. The "modem" should plug into
the router port that is by itself, all the way to one side. Then run a
cable from any of the five adjacent ports to the computer's NIC or
Ethernet card.

Other things to try:

Flush DNS

Click Start, Run, type:

IPConfig /FlushDNS [Press Enter key]

NETSH

Click Start, Run, type:

netsh winsock reset

Press Enter key

Restart the system

You can also try this software download from a working machine:

LSP-Fix

What you enter into the address bar of Internet Explorer (for example) is
the address of the router. There is no "should be" in this instance.

It does seem to me that you are way over your head at this time. It would
help if you would respond with the results of ipconfig/all.

To get this response, proceed as follows:

Press the "Start" button in the lower left hand corner of your screen.
Select "run" from the next screen
Enter "cmd" in the box of the run screen (do not enter the quote characters)
Cmd will issue a prompt which shows your current folder.
Enter "ipconfig/all" without the quote characters
Copy down the results of this command and post to this newsgroup.
Enter Exit to get back to Windows.

I like Jim's suggestion. Here is his idea again, this time
somewhat simplified:

1. Mark the line below with your mouse, then press Ctrl+C.
cmd /c ipconfig /all > c:\test.txt & notepad c:\test.txt

2. Click Start, then Run.

3. Press Ctrl+V, then Enter.

4. Copy the text you see into your reply.

Seeing that your using a router, you would need to set your ip address to
automatically detect, since cleaning your registry has no effect on router
settings, the ip address in it's memory should be the correct one.

Try going to control panel and running the connect to the internet wizard.
I'm assuming your ISP provider has also given you this same advice?

I'm suprised they can't resolve your issue by this method!

Do you use a Dial up connection, I assume not since you mentioned a router,
so it must be a DSL or Faster connection, do you use a software firewall
also? if so please state what it is.

When I click on Phone and Modem in Control Panel
I get message as follows.

Phone & Modem Options
Phone and Modem Control Panel can not be opened.
You may have a problem starting telephony service.

I have a DSL Broadband connection and am using a Belkin Router
Type ADSL Modem with Wireless-G Router.

Clicking on Network Setup Wizard elicits no response. It is dead.

Hi Robert

Since your wireless isn't working, you might need to connect your router
to the network card physically with an ethernet cable, then try again
opening its configuration page in your browser. Try 192.168.1.1

I think I owe it to all of you to tell you the outcome of my plight.

I had installed Ashampoo Winoptimiser 5.
I then inadvertently disabled many crucial services.
When I clicked to reactuivate ALL services and
restarted, the whole kit and caboodle came to life again.

I now have full unrestricted Internet and Email access,
which makes me a happy bunny again.

"Jaysus....You couldn't make this up.....!!!!"
