Invisible e-mail

I have written before about having e-mail that can't be seen. Let me
explain: A while back, my "inbox" said I had one unread e-mail, when
actually there wasn't any. I deleted EVERYTHING from ALL files, to where my
Outlook Express was totally empty, but beside the "inbox" file it said I had
one unread message. Where the heck is this one unread message? So I said
"The heck with it!" No one seem know the answer. That was about a year ago.
As of a few days ago I have acquired 3 more. Again I deleted ALL files, ALL
emails, to where Outlook Express is totally empty, but the inbox says I have
4 unread e-mail. Some one suggested if I delete "inbox.dbx", it will get rid
of the unread messages, and when I open back up OE will recreate itself
again. OK, even if I do this, won't this invisible e-mail that I keep
getting, keep coming back? I would like to know whom the e-mails are coming
from, so I can stop them from coming, or better still, I would like to know
how come they floating out there somewhere and I can't retrieve them. I just
don't want a virus lurking in my computer, but Norton says I don't have a
virus. I have ran all the virus programs, clean programs, check this, clear
that, delete those, etc. Still I have 4 unread messages. Any suggestions?

A while back, my "inbox" said I had one unread e-mail, when

Is this the number alongside the Inbox folder inside of OE? Or is it
the mail count display in the Fisher-Price "Welcome Screen" before you
even log into your user account?

Have you checked your views to make sure you aren't hiding any messages?

Some one suggested if I delete "inbox.dbx", it will get rid
of the unread messages, and when I open back up OE will recreate
itself
again.

How can it "come back" if the file in which it resided no longer exists?
What happened after closing OE, deleting the inbox.dbx file, and
reloading OE?

Have you tried defining a new identity and see what happens under it?
Maybe your old one has been corrupted which affects its counting.

The view has been changed to "Hide Read Messages." Outlook Express filters
messages that you have read from your Inbox view and reflects only the
number of unread messages in the lower-left corner of the Outlook Express
window. This gives the false impression that the read messages are missing
from your Inbox.

Use TweakUI - one of the XP Powertoys from
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

Be careful not to get the 'Itanium' version
Once installed you will find it in Start - All Programs - Powertoys for
Windows XP

Its Logon - Unread mail allows you to turn the matter off. Or Repair -
repair unread mail count resets the count to start over

****This is the number beside the "inbox" folder, and it's still there after ALL e-mail has been read, deleted and the folder is empty. I have checked "views" and there is no hidden anything, says "Show all.........".

*******I didn't OE because it just didn't seem like the smart thing to do, but then again what the heck do I know, I can't seem to find these misterious e-mails.

*******Haven't tried this, but it couldn't hurt. I'll let you know if there is anything to report.

The easiest fix and fastest is to delete the inbox.dbx file and load OE
to recreate it. Then check if the problem remains. If so, and only
after this easier fix didn't work, then try creating a new identity.

Thanks Alex, your procedure was precise, concise, and actually worked! The
mysterious "one unread mail message" under my user name on the welcome screen
is no more.

That must be a old post. Alex died almost 2 months ago.
