"invalid file format" .xls

I suddenly get "invalid file format" message for an Excel file I have opened
with no problem in the past. It has a .xls file extension. No change in
computer orversion of Office since I last opened the file.
 
Are you trying to open it from a floppy disk? Did you perhaps open it in Word
and save it from there?

If either of those things, it may be gone.
