two days ago - after ms pushed some updates - i booted my computer and got an
invalid boot ini - booting from c:\windows.

I'm running windows media center - sp2. Can someone tell me how to fix this
without reformating <--- thats what gateway wants me to do.

This is a 3 month old AMD 4200+ dual core machine.

Thanks

Gateway's recovery CD does not help. To enter the Recovery Console, you need
either the Windows XP CD-ROM, or the Windows XP Setup floppy disks set.

See:

Download and create a LiveCD http://www.knoppix.org/

You could then gain access to your hard drive and edit or create your
Boot.ini file

Borrow a real XP CD (not a system or quick recovery type like you have)
from someone, boot the CD, enter Recovery Console by pressing R at the
setup menu, select the windows installation (press 1 usually) type in
the Administrator password (if it's XP Home or you have not given
Administrator a password then just press enter for a blank password),
type in fixboot and press enter.
