Invalid boot.ini file

When my system boots up just before the Windows XP Home
splash screen I get in the upper left of the screen,
Invalid boot.ini file
Booting from C:\Windows
This was never there before. How do I repair this?
Do I have to use the recovery counsil to repair or
reinstall this? How do I do it? Please help
