Interrelated problems Word and NIS?

Now and again when I left click in a Word doc with my HP wireless
mouse, the cursor races towards the top of the document erasing each
character as it goes. If I move the cursor out of the document I hear
sound like a machine gun firing until I close the document.

Suspecting a virus I run a full scan with Norton Internet security,
but before the scan is complete my computer turns itself off.

Look in Event Viewer for an error after you run Norton AV scanner. There may
be hardware problems with your machine.

Have looked in the Event Viewer but see nothing that makes sense to
me.
The problem with deletions in Word and machine gunning I think lies
with a faulty keyboard. Replaced my Labtec keyboard with a Logitech
and so far have been free of the problem after running various tests.

The problem with the computer turning off is wider than where I first
noticed it with NIS. It happens also with other programs that run
unattended, so far with Nero and with Abby Fine Reader.

I have never heard of "Abby Fine Reader" but if more than one application is
causing the machine to shut down it is time for a thorough disk check,
memory diagnostic such as Memtest86+ or even Windows Memory Diagnostic. If
you don't have any hardware diagnostic on the machine, such as HP PC-Doctor,
try this link : http://www.tufftest.com/ . I could even be that your AC
power source is unreliable. If your AC voltage suddenly sags even for less
than a second the machine will shut down by itself. You may want to consult
with a repair technician or your PC manufacturer if you are under warranty.

Thanks for these suggestions, Allan.
Perhaps the AC voltage is not too likely, as the machine is a laptop
and my understanding is that if the line drops, the battery takes
over.

So, first off I'll do some thorough disk checking.

The problem is a little more scary than I reported previously. After
one unwanted shutdown the computer would n't start. I got a black and
white DOS screen with various choices for restarting (safe mode, last
working, etc.) but none of them worked. Tried all possible choices
about 10 times each. No entry into the machine. Took the rest of the
day off, went to art galleries and the theater. Came back, one last
compulsive try at bedtime and the computer started. Not too good a
situation.

The way to eliminate the possilibity of voltage sag is to get a UPS with
voltage regulation. I am not a power engineer and don't know how quickly the
battery will start working if the AC line voltage fails. It could also be an
internal problem with the power system; how old is the battery?

Yes, Allan, a UPS would be decisive, but the battery is only a year
old and seems to function nicely, so first I'll pay attention to
eliminating disk problems, as you suggested.

As a start, I ran Diskeeper, and although I defragment regularly, I
was astonished by the number of fragmented files compared to normal
pictures I see when defragmenting. Seems that the excessive
fragmentation is a result of the problem I'm having rather than a
cause of it because the machine has been shutting down after the
defrag.
