Internet with Cable Modem

B

billn

Trying to help a friend again.

He's got a laptop that is capable to receive Road Runner [that is it has a
network card, just like mine].

However, when he connects it to the cable from the cable modem and starts
IE, it receives nothing and insists on trying to dial a connection, saying
"you must establish a dial-up connection to connect to the Internet" or
somesuch.

The cable and cable modem are working as he runs his desktop off of this
cable.

Again here, it's probably just something to check or uncheck in a dialog
somewhere, I hope.

Anyone have any ideas please to point me in the right direction?

Thanks

Bob, thanks for the quick answer. He's out of town so won't be able to do
this until tomorrow.

Bill,

BobC's response to switch the setting to never dial a
connection is correct. But, when you switch computers
with a RR cable modem you may need to power down the
modem for about 10 seconds then restart it. This is
definitely the case with a PipeRider cable modem. What
the reset does is restablish the IP address for the newly
connected computer.

Good Luck
