Internet Time Sync

I went to the time settings and set up for Internet Time Sync but it
says it is set but the Windows Time Service is not running to start
it. I tried to start it but it will not start, says disabled (duhhh)
or no device. What device are they talking about. Can't I simply sync
with an Internet time service on Vista or must I continue to use
Dimension (which is good but why if Vista has its own) Never got this
working in XP either!

If you have a firewall enabled, ensure port 123 is allowed.

That won't help as I cannot get the service started. I have only the
windows firewall as Zone Alarm does not run on Vista.
I have spent little time with the Windows firewall learning curve at
this point so I don't know if I could open that port or not or even if
it already is?

Starting and Stopping Windows Time Service
By default, Windows Time Service starts automatically at system startup. You
can, however, start or stop the service manually by accessing services in
Administrative Tools or by using the net command.

To Manually Start Windows Time Service Using the Graphical Interface

1. Click Start, and then either click Control Panel, or point to Settings
and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Services.
3. Select Windows Time from the list of services.
4. On the Action menu, click Start to begin the service.

To Manually Stop Windows Time Service Using the Graphical Interface

1. Click Start, and then either click Control Panel, or point to Settings
and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Services.
3. Select Windows Time from the list of services.
4. On the Action menu, click Stop to discontinue the service.

To Manually Start Windows Time Service Using the Net Command

1. To open a command prompt, click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then
click OK.
2. Type net start w32time and then press ENTER.

To Manually stop Windows Time Service Using the Net Command

1. To open a command prompt, click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then
click OK.
2. Type net stop w32time, and then press ENTER.

Couple things to check

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\TimeProviders\NtpClient
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Services\W32Time\TimeProviders\NtpClient
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet003\Services\W32Time\TimeProviders\NtpClient

Someone in this group ages ago, posted a method to get XP to update more than
once a week. also works with Vista EXCEPT using windows.com. They don't want you polling their machine more than once a week, whether you hit it or not.

I went back at it yesterday, and accidentally set it to update every 60 seconds
vs every 3600 seconds [hour]. By changing all three registry entries in
SpecialPollInterval to 60 it took and checked time every minute. And no
failures this time. I can only assume all three registry entries needed changed
instead of just the one.

also tray, right clock the time [if it's there] if not make it appear there. Help shoould show you how to add it to the tray.
select adjust date time

date and time = set your time zone
change date and time is a manual adjustment. ignore for now
internet time tab = change settings.
if you want more than once a week updates ie: hourly, synch with an internet time server, I used time-nw.nist.gov. Hit update now and wait. might take a minute or more to respond. That's why it's just a tray hidden option.
you can change those registry settings before or after. As long as you avoid the windows.com time server.
