'Internet Shortcut' for every file I open?

Hello all

I've only just realised (because it showed up in a Search) that an
Internet Shortcut is created for every document I open in Windows.

These shortcuts have an IE icon and are stored in C:\Documents and
Settings\Username\Local settings\History\Today\My Computer, though in
the Search Results they just show up as in My Computer.

Why does XP do this? I thought History was for storing web addresses,
not shortcuts to local documents. Shortcuts for those are created in the
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Recent folder anyway, so why the
duplication?

They aren't shortcuts (it's just a file of addresses). It's a unified browsing experience.

Thanks for the reply, David. Hmm, okay, I'll take your word for it

From the way they behave, I'd call them shortcuts; e.g. if I click on
the one for barclays.txt, it opens in Notepad, click on myname.doc and
it opens in Word. They seem to act just like the shortcuts in Recent.

But since I've only just noticed them, I suppose it's not something to
worry about.

If you turn on your History pane you'll find there are 4 ways of viewing history (by date, by site, etc). Each view is one file. They are supposed to act like shortcuts.
