Internet Problem

I'm helping a friend with her computer. She started having problems when
going to certain websites. One of the websites she can't get to is Hotmail.

So far we've deleted the Cookie, History and Temporary Internet Files witout
success. She was using the Windows Firewall and we shut that down and it
didn't help. We installed FireFox and it couldn't access the same websites.
She has Nortons AntiVirus. We've run defrag and the Error Checking utility
on the hard drive, again it made no difference.

We did use Ping under the Command Promt and Pinged Hotmail and it worked, 0
dropped packets.

The only other things I can think of is to disable the antivirus and delete
then reinstall the Dial Up Networking for her connection.

Anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

A. The very first thing to do on a Windows machine that has problems
with the Internet is to scan for malware/viruses in Safe Mode. If you
didn't do this, then follow these steps:

B. If the machine is clean, and your friend can get to every place
*except* MS sites - information from MVP Steve Winograd:

This is a common problem with shared DSL connections that use PPP Over
Ethernet (PPPoE). Here are some possible fixes. Any one of them
should solve the problem:

1. Install Windows XP Service Pack 1 or 2 on the ICS host computer.

2. Find the right MTU setting on the client computer, as shown here:

http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/article04-107

and then make the setting manually on the client computer, or use
DrTCP to make it:

http://www.dslreports.com/front/drtcp.html

3. Download the free RASPPPoE program and install it on the host
computer. Use it instead of XP's PPPoE program. Details at these
sites:

http://www.raspppoe.com

C. And if the above doesn't apply and your friend can't get to secure
sites (Hotmail is one, I believe):

You have to re-register the following dll's at the command prompt (cmd).

If you have SP2, you can do it all in one go:

Start>Run cmd [enter]
iexplore.exe /rereg [enter]

Without SP2:

Start>Run cmd [enter]
regsvr32 mshtml.dll [enter]

Click OK when you get the message that DLLRegisterServer in FileName
succeeded and type "exit" to quit cmd.

Repeat the same with:

regsvr32 mshtmled.dll
regsvr32 urlmon.dll
regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 wintrust.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
regsvr32 dssenh.dll
regsvr32 rsaenh.dll
regsvr32 gpkcsp.dll
regsvr32 sccbase.dll
regsvr32 slbcsp.dll
regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll
