Internet Options Proxy Settings

My Internet connection does not require a proxy and does not work with the
Use proxy server checkbox checked. When I uncheck the Use a proxy server for
your lan checkbox, the Internet Options appears to accept this action when OK
is clicked and the window closes. However, when I reopen the Internet
options lan settings, the Use proxy server checkbox is checked again. It
appears that something is preventing the lan settings from being changed. I
had this problem a long time ago and there was a solution from these forums,
but I cannot remember it. Help will be appreciated.

Maybe there was malware, maybe not. I did find that tcpip.sys had been
changed, possibly by Windows update. The version changed to is an old one
that had problems with concurrent TCP connect attempts. There is a third
party patch for this that is frequently identified as a virus by antivirus
software. I had used this to resolve a problem, possibly this one a long
time ago. It didn't work this time.

I finally gave up the troubleshooting and reloaded from a backup that
predated the problem. I held my breath during Windows Update because this
problem seemed to begin when I used it in late December. Of four computers
in my network only one had the problem described. There is still some
indication that the problem in a lesser form may still be with me. I don't
know if some servers are responding slowly due to traffic or I still have a
problem. Saturday night is a busy time.
