How to Disable Proxy

D

Dave McAuliffe

I have the ATT provided accelerator which uses a proxy in order to speed up
dial-up connections.
In IE 6 under both:
Tools\Internet Options\Connections\Settings and
" " " \LAN Settings, I want
the "Use a proxy" box to remain unchecked. It gets rechecked after reboot.
I've tried http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=271361 without success (which
probably means it didn't have anything to do with the problem).
Thanks.

See if Proxy settings are enabled under Group Policy

start > run

gpedit.msc

then navigate to User Configuration > Windows settings > Internet Explorer
Mainetenance > Connections

Thanks for getting back. I don't have gpedit.msc. (XP Home) And there's
none on the recovery disk (eMachine). Can't find it on the MS site either.

And you won't with Windows Xp Home...

Look in the registry in the following location

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings

See if proxy enable value is set to 1...set it to 0

Thanks Gerry, that was the lead I needed. Even if "Use a proxy" in IE is
unchecked and the registry value is 0, upon reboot and without bringing up
IE the registry value resets to 1 which resets the check-marks (Use a proxy)
in IE when it's opened. (After testing) The ATT accelerator was resetting
the registry value with no way to stop it from doing so. I noticed in IE
the box "Bypass proxy" was unchecked under, and which is grayed out if, "Use
a proxy" is unchecked. Checking "Use a proxy" then checking "Bypass proxy"
and finally unchecking "Use a proxy" gives a grayed out box with a check in
it. This produced the desired results of blocking IE at the firewall, as it
was being allowed to connect previously through the proxy program.

Good deal...that was kind of where I was going. My brother in law had a
similar problem with his laptop which could only be used at work to access
the Interent so we set him up with two Reg keys that would switch him back
and forth depending on how he logged on,
