Yes! I have installed Spy Bot. Should I uninstall it?
I don't know how to enable Internet Options from Spy Bot.
Are you loading Spybot in easy or advanced mode? If the shortcut to Spybot
has the /easymode parameter then it is loading in easy mode. The option to
disable/enable the Internet Options applet is not available in easy mode.
Load Spybot without the /easymode parameter so it runs in advanced mode.
Then in the leftside category pane under "Spybot S&D", click the Immunize
button. In the rightside pane, scroll down to the bottom. You see the
option "Lock IE control panel against opening from within IE (current
user)". I think that is the option to which Rick referred. Locking the
start (or home) page is a separate option.
Note that using SpyBot to disable Internet Options disables it *only* from
being opened from within Internet Explorer. You can still open the Internet
Options applet from the Control Panel.
When you use Spybot to enable the lockout of IE control panel, the following
registry value gets defined:
HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions
NoBrowserOptions = 1
When you use Spybot to disable the lockout of IE control panel, the value
gets reset to zero:
HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions
NoBrowserOptions = 0
As I noted earlier, the same change can be performed using the Group Policy
Editor:
- Run gpedit.msc.
- Navigate the tree to select the following node:
Local Computer Policy
User Configuration
Administrative Templates
Windows Components
Internet Explorer
Browser menues
- Change the properties for the "Disable Internet Options ... menu option".
Because this is a negatively worded setting:
Disable = the menu is enabled.
Enabled = the menu is disabled.
The "Not configured" setting will erase the registry key (along with the
data value). Without it, the default of zero (0) gets used when this
setting is not defined (so the menu is enabled).
Again, this *only* disables or enables the Internet Options menu in Internet
Explorer. It does NOT prevent you from running the Internet Options applet
in Control Panel separately and outside of Internet Explorer. To also
disable (or reenable) the Internet Options applet in Control Panel, again
you configure a Group Policy setting:
Local Computer Policy
User Configuration
Administrative Templates
Windows Components
Control Panel
and configure the "Hide specified Control Panel applets" setting.
