internet explorer

I purchased a computer from a work partner. when i sign
on to the internet AOL i noticed some of my downloads and
mail reading were slow when i opened the task manager
there are multiple internet explorer sites trying to run
and outlook most all of them porn sites. it has also put
many of those sites on my favorits list in the internet
explorer list i dont use the explorer just aol how can
i stop these sites from running
