internet explorer

Everytime I open up internet explorer, it says internet
explorer has encountered a problem....etc. but if i send
the error report it guides me to a page where i can buy
an adware thing. then i click on a link and browse the
internet but everytime i open it up it still says
encountered a problem. what's goin on. I have a cable
modem and windows xp.
