Internet explorer won't open

I'm having an issue with one computer where IE 6 SP2 won't open. I've
changed the defaults and I have installed firefox as a work around for
now but I need IE. Firefox doesn't work with our AP accounting web
front end so I can't just switch over. When IE launches it loads the
homepage then crashes with no error message. I've re-installed the
ie.inf file, which didn't seem to fix the issue either. I have since
installed IE7 hoping that it would fix the issue but the same thing is
happening. Is this a winsock issue, and if so is it possible to fix on
Windows XP.

Check if you have the Yahoo toolbar, or any other Yahoo 3rd party add-on
components installed within IE.....if so, disable and/or remove them, and try
again.

It IS the Yahoo toolbar. We've had over 10 cases of this accross our
client base. Uninstalling Yahoo Toolbar fixed it each time.

I didn't know that the Yahoo toolbar was installed on this machine but

Ditto here.
3 different clients. 3 different sites.
All had the same symptom.
Internet Explorer would open momentarily and then simply shut down.
Removing the Yahoo! toolbar solved the problem.
Internet Explorer is working again.

From the Yahoo web site:

(note that you won't be able to use option 1, but I copied the entire text
just to provide the full answer as provided by Yahoo)

--------------------------------------------
How do I remove Yahoo! Toolbar for Internet Explorer?

There are two ways to uninstall the Yahoo! Toolbar for Internet Explorer.

Option 1: Via the toolbar()

Select "Uninstall" from the Pencil button (Toolbar Settings).
Click "Uninstall" on the uninstall page.
Close any open IE windows.
When you restart Internet Explorer, Yahoo! Toolbar will no longer be present.

Option 2: Via the Control Panel

Click the Windows "Start" button.
Select "Control Panel" from the "Settings" menu.
Double-click on "Add/Remove Programs."
Scroll down and click on the "Yahoo! Toolbar" entry.
Click on "Change/Remove."
Close any open IE windows.
Yahoo! Toolbar is now uninstalled. Start IE again after closing all your
open IE browser windows and it will no longer be present.

If you follow these steps and Yahoo! Toolbar is still present, make sure you
have closed all your open IE browser windows. Due to Internet Explorer being
integrated with Windows, you might need to restart your computer to fully
uninstall Yahoo! Toolbar.
