I have a problem Internet Explorer will not open. And when it does it takes
ages. It sometimes causes the desk top to freeze.

I have taken advice already from this site and recieved info from shenan
stanley MS-MVP I have done the whole list of tips from 1 to 11 and the
problem still exists. I have installed all the spyware, run, updated and
scanned. I have also done virus scans I have deleted internet files etc etc.
This still seems not to have solved the problem. What else can I do. Basic
language please. I am still trying to learn computer jargon.

"Etc. etc." doesn't tell one very much. But have you also defragged your
hard drive, uninstalled unneeded programs, updated your video drivers, or
repaired Internet Explorer (done via Add/Remove programs)?

Maybe you should just switch to Firefox or Mozilla.

Hi thanks for the reply

No I have not defraged my hard drive. Although I will do it now. I have
got rid of unwanted programms. I have not updated my video drivers. How do
I do this. I have not repaired IE as it is not on the list Add/Remove. I
have read up on this and I think IE was installed on the computer when I
bought it as package. As Windows XP home edition. I don't have a back up CD
just for IE. I made one for the whole system before downloading SP2 as
recommended. The link in microsoft to fix IE does not mention anything about
IE not being in the Add/Remove list. I have checked my IE properties and it
is version 6. I would appreciate any further information you think might
help. What are Firefox and Mozilla? I have never heard of them! Thank you
for your input.

Hi, Jackie.
See if this page is of any help, if IE is not listed in your Add/Remove
folder.

for your input.

Firefox and Mozilla are standalone browsers (i.e. not integrated with the
operating system). I've used them both. Mozilla is a browser/e-mail/
newsreader suite, while Firefox is solely a browser.

Mozilla: http://www.mozilla.org/products/mozilla1.x/

I have installed Mozilla and it opens no problem. Only thing missing is
Yahoo Search bar. Will take a bit of getting used to how it works. Even
opening this site was different. It opened up a window instead of a full
page. Well at least it works. Although I will still be endeavouring to fix
IE. So I hope the list of files above will give you an insight as to what
files are causing the problem.

I went to the site you mentioned it did not help me.

Thank you again

I don't know whether you have done it already, but I would try to delete
the index.dat file, which was on your list. Go here for instructions:

http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm

Windows in Mozilla can be stretched to full size, just as in Internet
Explorer. Just click on the corners and drag the window to full size. Then
close it, while holding down the Shift button.

There used to be a "Yahoo! Search Sidebar" for Mozilla, but it does not
work with the current version. Hopefully, it will be updated.

Goodbye and good luck.
