Hello,

Update from IE6 to IE7 fails. Following Desktop-link for Troubleshooting is
created: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=63939

System: Windows XP Professional

Directly after the installation ( Disk included SP2) all automatic updates
were installed, only the IE update results an error. A newstart is
recommended but results the same error.

- no Antivirus software installed
- fully functional internet connection with umts modem
- windows firewall is deactivated
- offline IE 7 installation and automatic update IE7 results the same error

Is there a solution to solve the problem and to update IE6?

Thank You!

You need to run a thorough scan for malware and viruses then try to get a
free Anti-virus either AVG, Avast, Bitdefender, Avira..etc to use to protect
you from getting infected with viruses, also you will need a firewall like
Comodo or kerio and ZA alo good.

Run a thorough scan by doing the following steps:
1... First, try to clean up your caches, Internet files and delete cookies
by doing this:
Click Start >> Control Panel >> Double click Network and Internet
Connections >> Double click Internet Options.
On the IE properties windows you will see these Tabs:
General | Security | Privacy | Content | Connections | Programs |
Advanced
Under General Tab clear your History, Internet Files and Cookies.
Then click on Advanced tab and scroll down to under the Browsing Option:
[&] Browsing
[ ] Enable Third-Party browser extensions (Req Rest) uncheck this box.
Then click on Programs Tab and click Manage Add-Ons and Disable all non
Verified Add-Ons (You should Renable them later one-by-one and see the
culprit and update it or remove it.
How to manage Add-Ons:

Scan for malware from here:
SuperAntispyware - Free

http://www.malwarebytes.org/rr-update/rr-free-setup.exe

Run a scan from here on-line:
http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/default.asp?langid=ie&venid=sym
http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusinfo/scan.aspx
Download Avast Cleaner (offline scanner) from here:
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-virus-cleaner.html

Comodo BOClean : Anti-Malware Version 4.27
http://www.comodo.com/boclean/boclean.html
Run disk cleanup on your drive.
avast! 4 Home - English

Did you just install or reinstall WinXP SP2?

How long has the machine been connecting to the internet or any networks
without a firewall or AV app installed?

=====================

The above notwithstanding...

Required reading IMHO before installing IE7:

Sandi's Installation Tips <= Steps #1-8, #10 & #11; take note of #12, then
STOP!
http://www.ie-vista.com/known_issues.html#pre-install
(ignore any references to Vista)

And I strongly recommend using
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/ie/getitnow.mspx as the
installation source, not Automatic/Windows Update.

Alternately, use this Direct Download link:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=9ae91ebe-3385-447c-8a30-081805b2f90b

Tip: Save the installer to your desktop, do not Run it.

Make *certain* that you check in at Windows Update immediately after
installing IE7 and install any critical updates offered. If Optional
Updates category offers Root Certificates update, I recommend installing it
to take full advantage of IE7's additional security.
